What breaks cleanly

Beef liver breaks cleanest, which is why handlers reach for it most often. Sardine heads crunch instead of crumble, so they work differently: they vanish in one bite but do not downsize as easily. Tripe falls somewhere between.
Size for sixty repetitions
One 3-ounce bag of beef liver at $20.00 is enough reward for a sixty-repetition session if you break each piece into pea-size or smaller. Because freeze-dried treats have no water weight, a small piece carries enough flavor that your dog does not need a marble-sized bite. Breaking treats before a session
Most handlers prep treats the night before. Break a 3-ounce bag of beef liver into a container, and you have enough for multiple sessions if you use pea-sized pieces. Pre-breaking saves time when you arrive at the training field and means you do not fumble with a bag while managing your dog.

How small is small enough?
If your training session runs more than thirty repetitions, use pieces smaller than a pea. Your dog should swallow and be ready for the next mark within one second of the reward landing.
Does size mean less value?
A tiny piece carries the same value as a marble-sized piece; freeze-dried treats have no water weight, so an ounce stays an ounce. What changes is how long a bag lasts per session, not what each bite contains.
Which break apart easiest?
Beef liver breaks cleanest under finger pressure. Sardine heads and shrimp are smaller pieces already, so they need less work. Tripe takes more pressure but still breaks into training sizes.
Can I pre-break treats at home?
Yes. Break a bag into a container the night before, and grab a handful for your session. They stay dry in any closed container and do not clump or powder.
What if I run out mid-session?
Freeze-dried treats keep at room temperature in a closed bag, so carry a backup in your car or leave a bag at the training field. Most handlers keep a three-pack of their favorite so rotation stays automatic.
