A working dog's week can involve more handlers than a race car: the primary handler, a spouse doing morning feeds, a kennel partner, sometimes a trainer. Every one of them makes calorie and workload decisions — usually without seeing anyone else's.
For dogs with jobs, the margins are tighter. Conditioning miles need managing against feeding; recovery days matter; weight creep costs performance long before it shows on the dog. And weight costs more than performance — up to 2.5 years of lifespan across breeds (Salt et al., JVIM 2019).
