Paint Sealant Kit

Wax is a morning of work and a few weeks of beading. A ceramic coating is a full day of decontamination and polishing before you open the bottle, and then years of protection if you did the prep properly. A paint sealant sits in between on both counts, which is why most people who wash their own car end up here. This kit is the sealant, the decontamination step it needs first, and a spray you use while drying to keep it going.
Between a wax and a coating
The three options are not really competing products. They are three different amounts of commitment. A carnauba looks warm on dark paint and then it is gone after a few washes, and the car wax kit is built around that cycle. A coating asks for bare, polished, chemically stripped paint and gives you a season you barely have to think about, which is the ceramic coating kit. A sealant wants clean paint rather than surgically prepared paint, goes on in an afternoon, and holds through a winter. If you wash the car most weekends and you are not going to spend a whole day on prep, that is the right trade. Feel the paint before you open anything
The clay pad is step one and it is the step people argue about. Run a hand over the roof and the upper half of the doors, and if the paint feels like fine sandpaper, there is bonded contamination on it. Sealing over that traps it, and the trapped grit stops the sealant bonding evenly. The 3D pad covers a far larger area per pass than a clay bar and 3D rates it for up to fifty vehicles, so it is a tool rather than a consumable. Two things it needs are not in this kit: a lubricant, which is in the add ons, and a machine polisher, because 3D designed the pad to run on one at low speed rather than in your hand. Claying a dry panel does damage.
POXY is the layer itself. 3D calls it a finishing wax, meaning protection alone with no cleaners and no abrasives in the bottle. The maker is direct about the consequence. 3D says that with nothing abrasive in it, POXY cannot remove swirls, scratches, oxidation or water spots, and belongs on paint that is already in new or excellent condition. That is the whole rule for using it. If the paint needs work, do the work first, because a sealant makes bad paint shinier and no better. Apply it thin. Thin is the difference between a ten minute buff off and an hour of fighting a haze.
Spray-It is the habit that keeps the layer alive. P&S built it on the idea that waxing should happen while you are already drying the car, and says it may be applied to wet or dry vehicles and sprayed on exterior surfaces with no adverse effects. So the routine is: rinse, mist one panel, dry it with the towel, move on. Every wash tops up what the weather has taken off, and the sealant underneath is not carrying the entire season on its own.
What a sealant cannot fix
Swirls, etching and water spots all stay exactly where they are, and a fresh layer over them will make them slightly easier to see rather than harder. Correction comes before protection, always. No panel wipe is included here either, because you only need one if you polished the car first, and in that case the prep in the add ons is what strips the polishing oils. We also left out a spray sealant as a substitute for the real thing, since an afternoon of proper application beats six months of spraying something on and hoping.
A Saturday morning, start to finish
Cool paint, shade, and check the forecast before you start. Rain landing on a sealant that has not hardened is a wasted afternoon.
- Wash the car as usual and leave it wet.
- Bag test the paint, then clay any panel that feels rough, running the pad on the polisher at low speed with the surface flooded.
- Rinse and dry the whole car.
- POXY on an applicator, thin, one panel at a time, and do not do the whole car before you start buffing.
- Level it off with a clean towel while it is still hazing rather than after it has gone hard.
- Leave the car dry overnight if you can, then use Spray-It at every wash from then on.
Give the car a full day before it sees weather if the timing allows. That is the single biggest difference between a sealant that lasts through the spring and one that starts patching out in November.
What you are actually buying
Two pints and a pad. Set that against a tin of carnauba that wants redoing every few weeks, or against a coating install that wants a full day, a polisher and a nervous first panel. The clay pad is the item that keeps earning after this job, since it comes back out every time you decontaminate. Sealant questions we get
How long does a paint sealant last?
3D does not state a duration for POXY, so nobody can give you an honest figure. Sun, miles and automatic washes with brushes are what shorten it, and topping up with the spray wax while you dry is what extends it.
Can I put a sealant over an existing wax?
You can, and it will not bond properly to anything except paint. Strip the old layer with a dedicated wash or a panel wipe first, otherwise you are sealing wax to wax.
Do I have to clay every time I seal?
No. Do the bag test each time and clay only what fails it, which on a maintained car is usually the roof, the hood and the lower quarter of the doors.
