Most puppies do not object to a paw being touched. They object to one being held a second longer than they agreed to. This kit is built for short repetitions rather than one long session. Weeks before a first nail trim, not the morning of
The groomer's appointment is in three weeks and nobody has ever picked this dog up by the foot. That is the right moment for this. This is not the kit for a dog who already has a history with clippers. A dog that has been pinned once needs a plan built backward from further away, usually with a trainer in the room, and a lick mat on its own will not undo it.
A mat at nose height and two rates of pay

Use whatever your vet or groomer recommends when you get there.
The first two weeks, one foot at a time
Days one to three, the mat does everything. Load it, stick it up, and sit next to the dog without touching a leg at all. You are teaching the dog that the mat means something good is happening here.
Days four to seven, add a hand on the shoulder while the dog licks. Nothing further down. Cheddar when the hand comes off, not while it is on, because the treat marks the end of a repetition rather than bribing through one.

Questions about session length, ear checks and chewing
How long should one session be?
Shorter than you want it to be. Ten to twenty seconds of handling is a full session for an eight week old puppy, and two of those a day beats one five minute attempt. Stop while the dog still wants more.
Can I use this for ear checks and brushing too?
Yes, and the mat is the reason. Using a lick mat during nail trims and brushing covers the brushing version, which runs the same way with a different body part and a longer load on the mat.
What if my puppy chews the mat instead of licking it?
