Swirl Remover Kit
Share
Swirl marks are wash damage. They are thousands of shallow scratches in the clear coat, dragged in by grit that was sitting under a mitt or a towel, and they only announce themselves when the sun hits at the right angle. A swirl remover takes the top edge off those scratches so light stops catching in them. This kit does that in one pass, by hand or on a light machine, and then keeps the panel clean enough that you are not back here next spring.
Where the circles come from
Look at a dark hood in direct sun and the pattern gives itself away. Fine arcs, following the way somebody wiped. Every one of them started as a piece of road grit held against paint by a mitt, a dry towel or an automatic wash brush that had already done forty cars that morning. Polishing fixes the paint you have in front of you. It does nothing about the habit, and if you go back to one bucket and a beach towel the arcs come back. The wash side is covered in washing a car at home without swirls, which is worth reading before you spend anything. Everything else we have built sits on the bundle guides hub.
One bottle instead of a two step
3D ONE is a hybrid. 3D describes it as a product that cuts like a compound and finishes like a polish, which is what lets a single bottle cover both ends of a correction that would otherwise need two liquids and two pads. The abrasive is what the maker calls alpha ceramic alumina, and 3D says the ceramic offsets the heat that alumina oxide conducts. 3D also states there are no fillers in the formula, so what you see after the wipe off is the real condition of the paint rather than something glazed over until the first rain washes the oil away. On a scratch deep enough to catch a fingernail, none of this will help, and no bottle will.
The black pad is the other half. 3D says the face is a super soft plush foam and that the pad provides little to no cut depending on the product and the paint, which reads like a weakness until you think about what you are removing. Clear coat is finite. A swirl sits a few microns down, so a soft pad carrying a hybrid abrasive gets there, and a cutting pad would take off more material than the defect is worth. Surface and coating compatibility is not stated by the maker for either the polish or the pad, so if the car already wears a coating, read the label before you start.
Pit Stop is the wipe down, and it does two jobs. P&S describes it as an extremely easy to use detail spray that removes dirt, fingerprints, dust and smudges, provides UV protection, and works on gloss and matte finishes alike. Straight after polishing it clears the residue so you can judge the panel under a light instead of under a film of oil. After that it lives in the trunk for dust between washes. P&S also lists it as a clay lubricant, which is one bottle you then do not have to buy for decontamination work.
The polisher question
There is no machine in this kit, so it assumes hand work. On a foam pad, worked by hand, 3D ONE will pull out the light marks. It will also take you most of a Saturday to get around a sedan, and your shoulder will remember it on Sunday. If a DA is already in your garage, mount the same pad on it and the job shortens to a couple of hours with a more even result. No compound is in here either, and that is deliberate, because compound on a cutting pad is a different and more aggressive job than this one. That is the compound and polish kit. Working one panel at a time
Wash and dry the car first, then park it in the shade. Polish on hot paint flashes off before you can work it through, and you end up fighting dried residue instead of the marks you came for.
- Start with the hood, because it is flat and it is the panel where any change shows up first.
- Four or five pea sized drops on the black pad, spread cold across an area about two feet square, then work it in overlapping passes.
- Keep the pressure light.
- Wipe the residue away with a clean towel and look at that section under a bright light before you move on to the next one.
- If the arcs are still there, go around again rather than leaning harder.
- Mist Pit Stop across the finished panel and wipe it through with a second towel.
Ella gets shut in the house while any of this is happening. Polish residue drifts and settles at exactly dog height, so keep the garage door down until every panel has been wiped and the towels are in the wash.
What a one step saves
A hybrid liquid and a single soft pad stand in for a compound, a polish, a cutting pad and a second finishing pad. That is four purchases and a shelf of half used bottles, replaced by two things and one afternoon. The catch is on the other side: freshly polished paint carries no protection at all, so plan to seal it the same day, and the POXY listed in the add ons is the short way to do that. Questions
Will this take out scratches as well
Only the ones your fingernail slides across. Anything your nail catches has gone through the clear coat, and that is a paint repair rather than a polishing job.
How often can I polish the same car
Once a year is generous, and most daily drivers need it less than that. Every pass takes a little clear coat with it, and the factory only gave you so much.
Do I need the ceramic soap in the add ons
Not for the marks that are already there. It matters afterwards, because a slicker soap lets the mitt ride over grit instead of dragging it, which is the whole mechanism that put the arcs in the paint.
