The Boss Educator: Long-Range Training for Serious Handlers
Introduction
For handlers who need working distance beyond the standard half-mile class, hunters covering open ground, field trial competitors, or anyone training in wide-open terrain, E-Collar Technologies builds two one-mile platforms. The Boss ET-800 is the general-purpose big-dog option, and the Upland UL-1200 is the bird-dog specialist. We're an authorized dealer and stock both.

Range: What a Mile Actually Looks Like
A mile is 1,760 yards, enough to keep a working dog in communication across an open field, marsh, or large tract of hunting cover, well beyond typical line of sight. Be honest with yourself about whether you train at that distance. Range does not affect stimulation precision or feature set, so buying more of it than you use is money spent on nothing. For yard-and-trail work the ET-300 at half a mile is genuinely enough for most dogs.
Who This Platform Is Built For
The Boss is aimed at two overlapping groups: handlers of large, powerful or hard-headed dogs who want more output available underneath the same low-level scale, and anyone training across genuinely open terrain. If your dog is under about 40 lbs and you rarely leave the park, this is more collar than you need.
ET-800 or Upland UL-1200?
Both run to a mile. The difference is what they are tuned for:
| The Boss ET-800 | Upland UL-1200 | |
|---|---|---|
| Range | 1 mile | 1 mile |
| Built for | Big, powerful or stubborn dogs | Upland hunting and field trial work |
| Two-dog version | ET-802 | UL-1202 |
Working or police K9 handlers should look at the K9-800 instead, same one-mile reach, mounted on a 33" bungee collar that holds contact through hard physical work.
How It Compares to the Half-Mile Class
| Mini Educator ET-300 | The Boss ET-800 | |
|---|---|---|
| Range | 1/2 mile | 1 mile |
| Output | Standard | Higher, for big/stubborn dogs |
| Best for | General obedience, off-leash reliability | Open-field, hunting, large or determined dogs |
Key Takeaways
- The Boss ET-800 runs to a full mile with higher output for large and determined dogs.
- The same 100 adjustable low-level steps sit underneath, so you can still start gently.
- Available as single-dog (ET-800) and two-dog (ET-802).
- For upland hunting specifically, the UL-1200 is the purpose-built alternative at the same range.
- More output means more responsibility: proper fit, lowest effective level, clear timing.
