Every great dog adventure starts where the pavement ends. The trailheads, the switchbacks, the summit snack with your co-pilot — none of it happens without someone protecting and maintaining those trails. What the American Hiking Society Does
Founded as the national voice for America's hikers, the American Hiking Society works on three fronts:
- Advocacy — working with Congress and federal agencies to secure trail funding and protect public lands.
- Volunteer programs — organizing trail maintenance and construction crews nationwide.
- Education — equipping hikers with the resources to explore safely and responsibly.
The Impact
AHS volunteers have contributed an estimated $98 million in volunteer labor and supported 46,000+ miles of trail maintenance — the unglamorous, essential work that keeps trails open for every hiker and every trail dog in the country.
