Big City Mountaineers: Getting Kids to Their First Summit

Remember your first time sleeping under real stars? For a lot of kids in America's cities, that night never comes — not for lack of wonder, but for lack of access. Big City Mountaineers has spent more than 35 years fixing that, and they're one of the causes we feature in Pit Stops for a Purpose.

What Big City Mountaineers Does

BCM provides free, fully-outfitted, professionally-led backcountry trips for youth from disinvested communities. Boots, packs, sleeping bags, food, transportation, trained guides — every barrier removed. Programs run in Birmingham, Denver, Minneapolis, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Seattle.

Why It Matters

Time in wild places builds confidence, resilience, and connection — the same things we see in every dog who finally gets their first big trail day. A first summit changes how a young person sees the world and their place in it. BCM makes sure that experience isn't reserved for kids whose families already own the gear.

Why Sniff and Shift Backs Them
