Guaranteed analysis (as fed, per manufacturer): Crude protein (min) 27%, Crude fat (min) 17%, Crude fiber (max) 6%, Moisture (max) 12%, DHA (min) 0.1%, EPA (min) 0.1%, Calcium (min) 1.8%, Phosphorus (min) 1.3%, Vitamin E (min) 750 IU/kg, Taurine (min) 0.1%, Omega-6 fatty acids (min) 1.1%, Omega-3 fatty acids (min) 0.6%, Glucosamine (min) 500 mg/kg, Total Microorganisms (min) 1 Million CFU/lb. Energy 3,370 kcal/kg (371 kcal per standard 8 oz cup), with 29 percent of calories from protein, 28 percent from carbohydrates and 43 percent from fat. Acana notes that the taurine, omega and microorganism lines are not recognised as essential nutrients by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles.

A genuine limited ingredient diet on the animal side: every animal protein in the list is lamb, four separate entries of it, lamb, lamb meal, lamb liver and lamb tripe, with fish oil the only other animal-derived item. That is unusual and it is the reason to pick this recipe over the broader Wholesome Grains range if you are working around a protein sensitivity. The important caveat is in the life stage claim rather than the numbers. The index lists this food as All Life Stages, but the maker's own AAFCO statement carries an exclusion: All Life Stages except for the growth of large breed dogs at 70lbs or more as an adult. That exclusion is not visible in the guaranteed analysis, which publishes a healthy 1.8 percent calcium and 1.3 percent phosphorus. If you have a large breed puppy, this is not the recipe, and the Wholesome Grains Puppy and Puppy Sea and Farm recipes are the two in the range that do include large breed growth. On disclosure, Acana publishes no sourcing and no made-in statement on the page, which is the whole of the two point gap in the tally.

Questions about Acana Wholesome Grains Lamb & Pumpkin (All Life Stages, Dry)

Is it really a single-protein lamb food?

On the animal side, effectively yes. Lamb, lamb meal, lamb liver and lamb tripe are the only meat entries, and fish oil is the only other animal-derived ingredient. That makes it one of the cleaner limited ingredient options in the range.

Can large breed puppies eat it?

No. The maker's AAFCO statement covers All Life Stages except for the growth of large breed dogs at 70lbs or more as an adult. Despite the All Life Stages label, that exclusion applies.

How much protein does it have?

Crude protein 27% as-fed minimum and crude fat 17% as-fed minimum, with 3,370 kcal/kg or 371 kcal per 8 oz cup. These are the maker's published figures, not our measurements.

Does it contain probiotics?

Yes, and as a published figure rather than a claim: a minimum of 1 million CFU per pound total microorganisms, from three dried fermentation products at the end of the ingredient list. Acana notes these are not AAFCO-recognised essential nutrients.
