Energy 3,370 kcal/kg (371 kcal per standard 8 oz cup), with 32 percent of calories from protein, 25 percent from carbohydrates and 43 percent from fat.

Eight separate fish entries, counting salmon, whole herring, trout, herring meal, salmon meal, whitefish meal, Acadian redfish and whole freshwater drum, and the added fats are sunflower and salmon oil, so there is no mammal or bird anywhere in the list. The DHA minimum of 0.3 percent and omega-3 of 1.0 percent are the highest in the Wholesome Grains range, which is what you would expect from a list like that. The number that stands out and deserves naming: crude fiber is published at a 15 percent maximum, where every sibling recipe in the range publishes 6 percent. That is a very high ceiling for a kibble, and it sits alongside a published Carbohydrate maximum of 30 percent that the other recipes do not state at all. Both figures are reproduced here as published rather than smoothed; a maximum is a ceiling rather than a measured value, but a ceiling two and a half times the rest of the range is worth knowing before you compare this against another food on fiber. As with its Wholesome Grains siblings, the AAFCO statement excludes growth of large breed dogs despite the All Life Stages label, and no sourcing or made-in statement is published.

Questions about Acana Wholesome Grains Sea to Stream (All Life Stages, Dry)

Why is the fiber figure so high?

Acana publishes a 15 percent crude fiber maximum for this recipe where its Wholesome Grains siblings publish 6 percent. We reproduce it as published. A maximum is a ceiling rather than a measured value, but it is two and a half times the rest of the range, so do not compare it against another food's fiber figure without noticing that.

Is it entirely fish?

On the published list, yes. Eight fish entries and no mammal or bird protein, with sunflower oil and salmon oil as the added fats.

Can large breed puppies eat it?

No. The maker's AAFCO statement covers All Life Stages except for the growth of large breed dogs at 70lbs or more as an adult.
