Metabolizable energy 3,610 kcal/kg (415 kcal per 8 oz cup), with 42 percent of calories from protein, 26 percent from carbohydrates and 32 percent from fat. The maker marks omega-6, omega-3, taurine, glucosamine and total microorganisms as not recognized as essential nutrients by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles.

The one line that decides whether this bag belongs in your house: its AAFCO statement reads Adult Maintenance, not all life stages, so despite the large breed name it is not a food for a growing large breed puppy. Orijen sells a separate Large Breed Puppy recipe for that. What you get instead is a 38 percent protein, 13 percent fat adult diet with the lowest fat figure of the Orijen dry range, which is the combination you would want for a heavy dog whose joints are carrying the load. Two inclusions speak to that directly: glucosamine at a 600 mg/kg minimum, and L-carnitine, which appears in this recipe and not in the Large Breed Puppy one. Calcium sits at 1.2 percent and phosphorus at 0.9 percent, the widest calcium to phosphorus spread in the range. The animal content is broad rather than single source: chicken, turkey, herring, salmon and sardine, plus chicken and turkey giblets and dehydrated chicken liver. It also publishes a probiotic guarantee, 100 million CFU per pound of Bacillus coagulans, which most makers do not state at all. The caveat is the one that applies to the whole grain-free Orijen range: red lentils, pinto beans, navy beans, green lentils, chickpeas and peas occupy positions ten through fifteen, the legume-forward profile examined in the FDA investigation into diet-associated canine dilated cardiomyopathy, which reached no causal finding. Taurine is published here at 0.1 percent. No sourcing and no made-in statement is published anywhere on the product page.

Questions about Orijen Large Breed Adult (Adult, Dry)

Can a large breed puppy eat it?

No. The maker's AAFCO statement for this recipe covers Adult Maintenance only. For a growing large breed dog, Orijen's Large Breed Puppy recipe carries an all life stages statement that includes growth of large size dogs.

What joint and weight support does the label publish?

Glucosamine at a 600 mg/kg minimum, and L-carnitine in the ingredient list. The Large Breed Puppy recipe publishes the same glucosamine figure but does not list L-carnitine.

Is it grain free, and does that matter?

It is grain free. Red lentils, pinto beans, navy beans, green lentils, chickpeas and peas carry the carbohydrate, the ingredient profile the FDA examined in its investigation into diet-associated canine dilated cardiomyopathy, which reached no causal finding. This recipe does publish a taurine guarantee of 0.1 percent.
