P&S Paint Coating Surface Prep 16 oz spray bottle of green liquid with a black trigger and Double Black label

Paint Prep Kit

A coating laid over polishing oil looks flawless for about eight weeks. Then it stops beading in patches, and because the failure is underneath the coating rather than on top of it, there is no fix short of polishing the whole car and starting again. Paint prep is the half hour that decides whether the expensive part of your weekend lasts a season or three years. Three stages here, in a fixed order: chemical, then mechanical, then a final wipe.

The failure nobody sees for three months

Wax and sealant sit on paint. A coating bonds to it, which is the whole reason it lasts longer, and a bond needs bare clear coat to grab. Anything in between becomes the weak layer. Polishing oils, silicone from an old dressing that drifted onto a panel, embedded iron from brake dust, a film of bonded fallout you can feel through a plastic bag: each one of those keeps the coating from touching paint in that spot. You do not find out at the time. You find out in February when half the hood sheets water and the other half wets out. This page sits with the rest of the decontamination guides on the bundle guides hub, and the chemistry itself is shelved in the Wash Bay.

Chemical first, then mechanical

Iron Remover goes on a washed car while the paint is still cool and wet. 3D describes it as a high performance, acid free iron remover that breaks down and loosens brake dust, traffic pollution and road film, and states that it cleans painted, chrome, polished and coated aluminum wheels without damaging the surface. Spray it across a panel and wait. It runs purple down the panel while it works, and on a white car that has spent a winter behind city buses the runoff is an ugly, convincing sight. Rinse thoroughly before it dries, then move to the next panel rather than doing the whole car at once.

The clay pad handles what the chemistry left behind, which is mostly industrial fallout, tree sap mist and overspray. 3D rates the pad for up to fifty vehicles, and it covers far more area per pass than a bar kneaded flat between your fingers. It also does not need throwing away when you drop it, which a bar does. One point matters more than any of that: the pad needs proper lubrication, and clay lube is not included in this kit. It is listed in the add ons, and running clay on a dry or under lubricated panel is how people put marring into paint they came to improve.

Paint Coating Surface Prep is the last thing to touch the car before protection goes on. P&S states it is a surface preparation solution to clean paint surfaces prior to application of automotive coatings, and describes its purpose as cleansing the paint of wax, silicone or other contaminants that could potentially hinder the coatings performance. Polishing residue is exactly that. Wipe on with one towel, wipe off with a second, panel by panel, and do not touch the paint with your hands after this point, because finger oil is a contaminant like any other.

What is deliberately missing

No polish. Decontamination and correction get confused constantly, and they are separate jobs with separate goals, so a compound or a one step does not belong in a prep kit. If the paint has swirls, polish it before you prep it, never after. No wash soap either, since you already own one and any decent soap will do for the wash that precedes all of this. The clay lubricant and the extra towels are add ons rather than included items so you can buy the sizes that fit how often you do this. Both of those, and the rest of the decontamination shelf, are listed on Explore.

The morning before you coat

Work in the shade and keep every panel wet or damp until the stage is finished. This entire process is about what is left on the surface, so drying product onto the car undoes the point of it.

  1. Wash and rinse the car normally, then leave it wet.
  2. Iron remover on one panel at a time, dwell for the time the label gives, rinse hard.
  3. Clay the same panel with plenty of lubricant, in straight lines rather than circles, until the surface goes quiet under the pad.
  4. Rinse and dry the whole car.
  5. Prep wipe last, two towels, and then nothing but the coating applicator touches the paint.

Clear the driveway before the iron remover stage. The runoff carries a long way off a rinsed panel, and it will find whatever you left parked alongside.

What skipping it costs

A coating applied over a properly prepped car can run for years. The same coating over a poorly prepped one starts failing in patches within a season, and the remedy is the whole job again from polishing onward, which is a full weekend rather than a half hour. Three bottles in this kit replace a much longer shopping list, since the prep wipe doubles as a check on your polishing and the clay pad outlives a drawer of bars. One thing to plan around: Pal Automotive items are sold and shipped by Pal Automotive through Shopify Collective, not made or shipped by Sniff and Shift. Book the Saturday once everything has actually landed.

Questions

Do I need to clay if the paint already feels smooth

Check it properly first. Put your hand in a plastic sandwich bag and run it lightly across a horizontal panel, and the bag amplifies anything bonded to the surface that your fingertips miss. Smooth in the bag test means you can skip the clay and go straight to the prep wipe.

Can I use the prep wipe on glass and trim

On glass it works well before a glass coating. On plastic trim, compatibility is not stated by the maker, so test a small hidden area first rather than finding out on a visible piece.

How long between prepping and coating

The same day, ideally within a couple of hours, and keep the car indoors in between. A prepped panel is bare and it will pick up dust, pollen and whatever is in the air the moment you walk away from it.
